TPS / CTPS Screening API (UK)

Don't call the people who opted out, screen UK numbers against the preference registers before you dial.

Try it free from £0.004 per request, down to £0.00075 at volume

What it checks

TPS / CTPS Screening checks a UK number against the Telephone Preference Service (consumer) and Corporate Telephone Preference Service (business) registers, the opt-out lists for unsolicited sales and marketing calls. Calling a registered number can mean ICO fines, so this check tells you, before you dial, whether a number is registered, when it was registered, and the line context. It's a compliance gate, not a quality check.

What it returns

  • TPS / CTPS / UNLISTED status , whether the number is on the consumer register, the corporate register, or neither
  • Registration date , when the number was added to the register
  • Operator , the network operator for the number
  • Line type , the type of line (UK), e.g. mobile or fixed

When to use it

  • Before any outbound sales or marketing call campaign to UK numbers, to stay on the right side of TPS/CTPS rules.
  • When importing or buying a list, to screen out registered numbers before they reach your dialler.
  • On a recurring basis for existing contact data, since registration status changes over time.
  • As a compliance gate ahead of HLR, so you only spend on reachability checks for numbers you're allowed to call.

When not to use it

  • As a reachability check, TPS/CTPS tells you whether you may call a number, not whether the handset is live. Use HLR for that.
  • Outside the UK, these are UK preference registers; they don't cover other countries' Do Not Call lists.
  • To override existing consent records, a number not on TPS still needs a lawful basis to contact; screening is one part of compliance, not all of it.
  • As a data-quality signal, registration status says nothing about whether the number is valid or the person is real.

How to read the result

Read the status as a go / no-go for marketing calls, and keep the registration date for your audit trail.

Unlisted (not registered)
Not on TPS or CTPS. You may call for marketing, provided you also have a lawful basis and any required consent.
TPS registered
On the consumer opt-out list. Do not make unsolicited marketing calls; calling risks ICO penalties.
CTPS registered
On the corporate opt-out list. Treat business marketing calls as off-limits unless you have an existing relationship or consent.
Registration date present
Keep it for your compliance audit trail, and re-screen periodically as registrations change.

Common Questions

TPS / CTPS Screening FAQ

What's the difference between TPS and CTPS?

TPS is the Telephone Preference Service, the opt-out register for consumers. CTPS is the Corporate version, for businesses. Provero screens against both so you know whether a number is registered before you dial.

Why does screening matter legally?

Making unsolicited marketing calls to a TPS/CTPS-registered number can lead to enforcement action and fines from the ICO. Screening first is a core part of staying compliant.

Does TPS screening tell me if the number is live?

No. It tells you whether you're permitted to make marketing calls, not whether the handset is switched on. Pair it with the HLR check for live reachability.

Does this cover numbers outside the UK?

No. TPS and CTPS are UK preference registers. Other countries have their own Do Not Call regimes that these don't cover.

How much does TPS/CTPS screening cost?

It starts at £0.004 per request and steps down to £0.00075 at volume on a prepaid, graduated balance, with free credits to run a real sample of your own data through every check.
